VA constant crashing after latest Windows update
« on: January 11, 2017, 10:20:28 pm »
I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate, the latest MS update KB3212646 installed today and VA has been crashing constantly since. The crashes happen randomly while the program is loaded and sitting idle (listening functions on).

Any error message you are getting that you could share?

In the meantime, I'll get my Win 7 machine up to speed and try it out with that update to see if I can reproduce the problem.

Just going to shoot from the hip here...   Close VA.  In your VoiceAttack installation directory, try moving your MSTaskBar.dll file to, say, the, 'apps' directory.  Run VA and see if that changes anything.  You should see a warning message that your task bar file is missing... just ignore that.

I've spent the last three evenings updating my Win 7 machine on the side trying to get to the most current updates.  Will let you know if I am able to reproduce the problem once I get there.

I have not received any other reports of VA not working after an update other than this one, so I'm going to say a little prematurely that you might have a deeper conflict going on and you may have to roll back your update in order to use VA with Win 7 in that configuration.

Hmmm.... I was thinking the task bar component would be what was causing the problem.  Looks like that goes all the way back to November, so I was on the wrong trail regarding that.  It's strange that it's getting those errors...  that's a separate problem, though.

So, there's no message box that pops up or anything?

Are you using joysticks or plugins or anything like that?  (should have asked these first)

I'm not sure where to guide you on this, as VA was working fine until there was an update and then after the update, VA no longer works.  If it was a little more widespread, I would have something to go by.  Do you have a system image prior to the update?

Still applying updates on my Win 7 machine to try to reproduce.  There was a problem and it shut off in the night o_O

I got everything up to date on my Windows 7 machine, including security rollup update KB3212646 and VoiceAttack has been running fine now for a little over a half hour an hour.

There's got to be an odd combination of things on your machine that is causing VA to not work.  You'll want to open a command prompt and run CHKDSK, followed up by a system file scan:  https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/929833/.

Ran both commands, they found some things and fixed them, VA still crashes.

BTW, VA can take 20 mins to crash or a couple hours, it's random.

I also left the computer alone with no other apps running to check if my actions or another program were causing it, VA still crashed.

If there are no plugins running, and joysticks are not enabled, I'm rather stumped on this one.  You can always try updating the drivers on your machine to see if that helps out at all.
